ABOUT ABOUT

LGBT + Queer Resources at the Fisher Rare Books Library will kick off our month-long Linked Oppressions event series.

Linked Oppressions was born out of the realization that our individual lives and identities continue to be shaped by the intersectionality of multiple types of discrimination. The ways in which we are racialized and marked by gender, sexuality and dis/ability impact how we occupy certain spaces, negotiate personal relationships and encounter everyday realities.

An annual tradition of the Equity Studies Student Union, Linked Oppressions is a month-long event series that examines how various forms of marginalization, (with an emphasis on racism, homophobia and transphobia), are articulated, experienced and resisted.

During this special workshop, students will have the opportunity to explore LGBT and Queer resources with an emphasis on the intersectionality of race, sexuality and gender, among other equity-oriented themes. The exhibit will showcase rare materials, including selections from Fisher’s Lesbian Pulp Fiction collection, 1980s HIV/AIDS Propaganda Posters, and a Sermon on the Destruction of Solomon dating back to 1612, among other pieces. The collection will centre on (but is not limited to) Fisher’s Canadian Queer Collection, including posters, pamphlets, periodicals, epheremas and books that will be accessible to UofT students throughout the year. Join us as we talk about the role that media has played in racist and homophobic discourses throughout history, and also check out some very cool resistance literature! Please note that this is a limited attendance event (the audience will be limited to 20 persons).
